International Society of Sustainability Professionals Continuing Education

LCA 101: This course meets on-line on Tuesdays (June 7, 14, 21, 28) at 1:00PM PST for 60-90 minutes.

This is an introductory course on life cycle assessment. Participants will learn the steps involved and complete a simple LCA in a business simulation using an Excel spreadsheet. This is a great introductory course for:

  • Sustainability professionals wondering if LCA would be a good field to get into.
  • Sustainability practitioners who may need to hire a firm to do a detailed LCA and need to know enough about the process to manage the project.
  • Sustainability professionals who need an introduction to LCA before taking the 'deep dive' into the certificattraining.

March 2011 - Workshop: Measuring Impact: Enterprise GHG Inventory and Product Carbon Footprint Assessment

 

Course description:

This course provided background, process and concrete tools for conducting a GHG inventory of a company and carbon footprint of a product.

The material presented included key context, policy trends, and emerging protocols overview, and the entire process, including:

 - Selecting relevant protocols and data tools
 - Setting boundaries for your inventory
 - Data gathering
 - Calculating emissions
 - Estimating emissions sources with incomplete data
 - Interpretation of results, and framing of major issues
 - Final reporting writing and other dissemination

The course was broken up into four classes:
 
Cass 1: Overview, policy and regulatory update

Class 2: Company level GHG inventory, offsets and trading

Class 3: Product GHG footprint and certification

Class 4: Program management and practical tools


The course provided a foundation in the main technical issues so students can be ready to take on the task of a carbon GHG inventory or carbon footprint in a wide variety of circumstances.
